Thermal expansion calculator

Estimate elongation from material, initial length and temperature change.

How to use

Calculation inputs

Calculation result

Enter the values; results update automatically.

Material presets use mean coefficients for 20–100 °C. Enter an appropriate coefficient outside that range. Assumes a constant coefficient and free expansion; does not calculate stress in restrained parts.

How to use

Select the material, then enter the initial length in mm and temperatures in °C. Enter the coefficient as the number in 10⁻⁶/K; for example, enter 16 for 16 × 10⁻⁶/K.

Example calculation

A length of 1000 mm, coefficient of 16 × 10⁻⁶/K and temperature rise from 20 °C to 80 °C give 0.96 mm expansion and a final length of 1000.96 mm.

Calculation method

ΔL = L₀α(T₁ − T₀) × 10⁻⁶; L₁ = L₀ + ΔL (L: mm; α: 10⁻⁶/K; T: °C)

Calculation limits

Material presets use mean coefficients for 20–100 °C. Enter an appropriate coefficient outside that range. Assumes a constant coefficient and free expansion; does not calculate stress in restrained parts.
